Two in hospital after light aircraft crashes near airport

Two people have been taken to hospital after a light aircraft crashed in Monkton near Prestwick Airport.

Police Scotland said the crash happened at about 16:10 on Tuesday. Emergency services were in attendance.

The coastguard helicopter later landed at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, having been seen coming from the area. It was followed by the air ambulance.

The A719 is closed near the B739. Drivers have been asked to avoid the area.

The plane is understood to have crashed on private land.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said “Around 4.10pm on Tues 23rd April 24, we received a report that a small aircraft with two people on board had crashed in Monkton.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service confirmed that two appliances and heavy rescue equipment remained at the scene.
